5 Easy Steps to pay more for your Auto Insurance (yes I said pay more)
Ok, so nobody wants to pay more for your auto insurance but follow these 5 steps and you will be sure to pay more for your auto insurance policy.
1. Keep the same insurance agent and insurance company for as long as possible. I
am still amazed at how many people I talk to that have had the same agent and company for 10+ years! Let’s face it, there are some differences in insurance companies but when it comes to your personal auto insurance most companies will have similar customer service and claims handling. So first you should talk to an independent insurance agent so they can get an auto insurance quote from multiple companies. Then you should have your insurance agent get a new auto insurance quote at least every year and definitely every 2 years. As you get older or your kids start driving the auto insurance rates are very different among companies and you could be surprised how much more you might be paying than other companies.
2. Get a ticket or accident and to really increase your premiums get a drinking and driving ticket. Of course you know that getting a ticket or accident will likely increase your auto insurance premiums but a drinking and driving ticket will not only cause you to pay more for insurance, it will most likely get your auto insurance canceled and force you to go to a sub standard insurance company that will charge you anywhere from 2 – 5 times what you were paying before.
3. Buy your 16 year old child a brand new car to drive. Now if you are buying a brand new car for your child you may not worry about the high insurance premiums but having a young driver listed as the driver of a new vehicle you can be sure to have a nice increase in insurance cost. My advice has always been to get a lower cost vehicle and don’t put comprehensive or collision coverage on it. You will still be paying quite a bit but it will help keep the cost down.
4. Let your Uncle Eddie live at your house without his own auto insurance. Most insurance companies now pull reports that show licensed drivers in a household. If Uncle Eddie shows up at your address they will want to see proof of his auto insurance or they will add him to your policy. Now this might not cause a huge increase but my guess if his name is Uncle Eddie he might have some tickets or accidents on his record which will definitely give you a nice increase in cost.
5. Move to Detroit. Detroit was recently listed as the most expensive city for auto insurance. If you combine the Michigan no fault auto insurance system (still offers unlimited medical benefits) and that high number of auto claims in the city of Detroit and you get the highest insurance cost in the country. This is not unique to Detroit. If you go to any major city in your state you will likely pay 20% or more for your auto insurance. This is simply because there are more people and more traffic and more claims for the insurance company.

Professional Liability Insurance – Do you need it?
Many of you have heard of Professional Liability Insurance or Errors and Omissions Insurance but do you really know if you need it? First we need to look at the actual Commercial General Liability policy and understand why certain things are not covered.
General Liability refers to Bodily Injury or Property Damage caused by the Business or Insured. This type of coverage does not apply to an accountant making an error on your tax returns or misfiling something. There is no bodily injury or property damage but potentially a large financial loss due to your negligence. Many businesses simply go without this coverage either because they think it’s too expensive or their agent doesn’t offer a Professional Liability Insurance quote to them. It depends on the profession you are in but for many businesses Professional Liability Insurance is very affordable. Also one thing to understand when deciding if you need Professional Liability Insurance is that it will cover your attorney fees to defend a suit against you. Ask yourself, can your business afford to pay out thousands of dollars to defend a suit that may have no merit? In today’s world frivolous lawsuits are quite common and having Professional Liability Insurance or Errors & Omissions Insurance will put the insurance company immediately to work on resolving any type of claim situation.
So how do you know if your business needs Professional Liability Insurance or Errors and Omissions Insurance? First think about what would happen if you made a big mistake for one of your clients. Will it cause a large financial loss for them? Is it something you can quickly correct on your own? If not it’s time you get a Professional Liability Insurance quote or and Errors and Omissions Insurance quote. The obvious professions that need Professional Liability are Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants and Insurance Agents. Mistakes in those professions can cause large financial losses or serious permanent injury not covered by the General Liability policy.
Now lets look at other professions where you might need it. One common professional liability coverage is Printers Errors and Omissions Insurance. Now it may not seem obvious but there are many ways for a Printer to have an error and cause a large financial loss. For example if they Print Mail order catalogs and they put the wrong phone number or website on the catalog and they are shipped out to 10,000 people before it was detected. Not only would they have to re-print all of the 10,000 catalogs but there would also be lost revenue that the company would likely sue the printer for.
Do your business a favor. If you don’t have Professional Liability and think you may need it, either give your agent a call or call our office and we would be more than happy to discuss your situation.
