4, Physical Damage on Truck/ Own Trailer. This is collision and comprehensive on own truck/tractor or trailer.

5. General Liability: Provides Commercial General Liability for the business itself, not the trucks.

6. Workers Compensation. Covers employees/ drivers for medical payment & disability income for any work related injury or disease.

7. Occupational Accidents. Provides limited medical payment and limited disability income benefits for any work related injuries.

8. Umbrella Coverage. Provides extra liability coverage above and beyond the underlining General Liability, Auto Liability and Workers Compensation.

9. Hired and Non-owned Auto: Provides coverage for auto hired by the insured, or autos that are not owned by the insured when they are used in connection with the Insured’s operations (not easy to get for a small commercial trucking business.)

10. Towing and Rental: Towing provides coverage for towing the disabled truck when involved in a covered loss (ie accident, theft, etc.) Rental coverage provides for limited payment to rent similar truck in the event the insured truck is disabled because of a covered loss.

When all the important information has been covered, it is now easier to find the right company/ agent. The next step will be to look at the insurance quotes in the market. This can easily be done via the Internet by visiting various websites that offer the service. There are so many trucking insurance companies who offer their services online, looking through the options will help a person come up with a list of insurers they can work with.

Fill out the forms of potential insurers and they are bound to send a quote. In the long run, a person gets so many quotations from several companies/ brokers. This makes it easy for someone to choose the best alternative for them. However, there are other factors that will influence the overall decision.

Once a person has all the quotes they need, they can conduct a thorough review on each one of them. 6. Radius of Operations: There are no rules here. Some companies prefer short range (up to 300 miles) truckers while other will penalize local truckers (especially if the trucking business is situated in a large metropolitan area like Chicago or New York.) Progressive Insurance, for instance, does not allow over 500 miles for radius of operations, but may allow it on restricted basis. Other companies (such as Canal) may give much better rate for longer range operations.

7. Merchandise Hauled. Certain merchandise (electronics, expensive clothes) are more expensive to insure that, for example paper products, or regular household products. Refrigerated products are also more expensive to insure than plastic products.

In the event that this is the first time a truck is being insured, it is important to include riders in the cover. This option can be offered at a higher charge than the normal cover. It is usually cheaper to pay the insurance company annually, this is because there are certain discounts offered when the payment is made in bulk. This option is not offered by all the agents, so you need to ask about it before committing to a certain commercial trucking insurance.

Step 1. Go Independent. For business insurance you will be best suited with an agent that works for an Independent Agency. You want an agent that can quote your business through multiple Insurance Companies to find the best fit for your particular business.

What happens is when you have an audit your policy already renewed based on the same information from the previous year. When the audit gets processed it doesn’t automatically change the revenue and payroll numbers on your Insurance renewal unless your agent catches it and makes the change.

1. Keep the same insurance agent and insurance company for as long as possible. I

am still amazed at how many people I talk to that have had the same agent and company for 10+ years! Let’s face it, there are some differences in insurance companies but when it comes to your personal auto insurance most companies will have similar customer service and claims handling. So first you should talk to an independent insurance agent so they can get an auto insurance quote from multiple companies. Then you should have your insurance agent get a new auto insurance quote at least every year and definitely every 2 years. As you get older or your kids start driving the auto insurance rates are very different among companies and you could be surprised how much more you might be paying than other companies.

2. Get a ticket or accident and to really increase your premiums get a drinking and driving ticket. Of course you know that getting a ticket or accident will likely increase your auto insurance premiums but a drinking and driving ticket will not only cause you to pay more for insurance, it will most likely get your auto insurance canceled and force you to go to a sub standard insurance company that will charge you anywhere from 2 – 5 times what you were paying before.

3. Buy your 16 year old child a brand new car to drive. Now if you are buying a brand new car for your child you may not worry about the high insurance premiums but having a young driver listed as the driver of a new vehicle you can be sure to have a nice increase in insurance cost. My advice has always been to get a lower cost vehicle and don’t put comprehensive or collision coverage on it. You will still be paying quite a bit but it will help keep the cost down.

4. Let your Uncle Eddie live at your house without his own auto insurance. Most insurance companies now pull reports that show licensed drivers in a household. If Uncle Eddie shows up at your address they will want to see proof of his auto insurance or they will add him to your policy. Now this might not cause a huge increase but my guess if his name is Uncle Eddie he might have some tickets or accidents on his record which will definitely give you a nice increase in cost.

5. Move to Detroit. Detroit was recently listed as the most expensive city for auto insurance. If  you combine the Michigan no fault auto insurance system (still offers unlimited medical benefits) and that high number of auto claims in the city of Detroit and you get the highest insurance cost in the country. This is not unique to Detroit. If you go to any major city in your state you will likely pay 20% or more for your auto insurance. This is simply because there are more people and more traffic and more claims for the insurance company.

Getting the right Contractor Insurance coverage at the right price isn’t always as straight forward as it should be. If you are a contractor that has employees it can always be tricky on how to include them on your insurance policy. Do you 1099 your employees or are they all W-2 employees? Do they work for other contractors or only you? Do you need to cover them on your Workers Compensation Insurance? These questions can always be difficult to answer and too often they go unanswered until the insurance company does an audit and discovers that you drastically underpaid your insurance premium. Now I always recommend that you include all anticipated payroll whether it’s going to be W-2 or 1099 wages. The reason this is important is because the rate you pay for your Contractor General Liability Insurance is directly related to the amount of payroll you have. This payroll includes any 1099 wages if those 1099 employees do not carry their own Liability or Workers Compensation Insurance. This is where many mistakes are made when the policy is quoted. They might go with the lowest Insurance quote they get when really the payroll used could be half of the other Contractor Insurance quotes they received. So at the end of the year the auditor find those wages and adds it to the policy resulting in a large audit bill (usually due within 30 days). So make sure you accurately communicate your anticipated payroll numbers to your agent when getting your Contractor Insurance quote.

The other line of coverage that often goes overlooked is your Contractor Tools and Equipment. Your business personal property coverage usually will only be covered when it is located at your insured premise. This will cover your tools but most likely it will not extend the coverage to the job site. The most common claim I see for contractors is their tools getting stolen from the job site! So this is important to discuss with your agent. You need to add your Tools and Equipment under a coverage called Inland Marine Coverage. This coverage will usually extend the coverage for your tools anywhere in the world. Also for larger equipment (usually over $500) you can schedule the exact piece of equipment with the year, make and model so the insurance company knows exactly what it is. For all other equipment I always recommend making a list of everything with an actual cash value next to each item and give it to your insurance agent. This will help to ensure you have the right amount of coverage for your equipment.

For Restaurant Owners, the Business Insurance is usually the last thing on your mind. Running a successful Restaurant takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The first thing that you need to review is the replacement cost of your Restaurant Equipment and Business Personal Property. The first question I usually ask when reviewing a Restaurant Insurance policy is how much would it cost to go out and buy brand new Restaurant Equipment and all of your other Business Property in the Restaurant. In most cases the number I get from the Business Owner is higher than what they are covered for! Also make sure you ask about Food Spoilage coverage since in most cases Food Spoilage has to be added as a separate coverage. Another important coverage is Business Income. This should be at least enough income for your business to survive for 12 months. Also it is important to have Business Income and Extra Expense. This will pay you for lost revenue and additional expenses such as your lease payment or even payroll for your employees. It is common to see this coverage with a set limit over a period of time, such as $100,000 1/6 limitation. This means they have the sooner of $100,000 or 6 months. I do not recommend anything less than 12 months and actual loss sustained (if possible). This means there is not a limitation and will last for 12 months. This is an important coverage for Restaurant Insurance since it can take up to 12 months to re-build a restaurant. The last coverage I want to discussed that is often the most over-looked is Non-Owned Auto coverage. Like most restaurants, food isn’t only served in the restaurant but delivered to individuals or businesses and catered to various events. Non-Owned auto coverage will protect your business if one of the drivers (even if driving their own vehicle) is involved in an at fault accident in the course of a delivery. I cannot stress how important this is for a Restaurant Insurance policy and one that is often not included by the Insurance Agent.
